I've replaced my two old and broken sock hangers. I've replaced my two old and broken sock hangers. I extended their useful lives as far as I could, but they were literally falling apart πŸ™ˆ . The one on the left-hand side I bought second-hand. The one on the right-hand side I bought new and it is a stainless steel one. Initially I wanted to buy two stainless steel ones, but I saw this pre-loved one (like new condition) and decided to get it for $2 πŸ˜‰. . One of the shifts I've made over the years is to change the criteria when I need to buy stuff. Before it was mainly price and appearance, if it was cheap and nice, then it was a great deal. That's what I learned growing up. . As I keep learning, l try to ask different questions like: πŸ’š Do I really need it? πŸ’š Can I get it second hand? πŸ’š How often am I going to use it? Can I just borrow it? πŸ’š What material is it made of? Is it going to last? πŸ’š Can I find the same product from a higher quality and still afford it? πŸ’š Can I repair it? πŸ’š Where did this product come from? Who am I supporting with my purchase? πŸ’š Is it sustainable? . I don't always can find answers to my questions. Sometimes I can not make the best decision possible. Sometimes I need to compromise. Sometimes I fail miserably, but I do the best I can. . Unsolicited magazines. From time to time I get the Unsolicited magazines. From time to time I get them. This one was from a donation I gave to an org. I assume they send these to people who have supported them, as I have never subscribed and I am usually very careful to ensure I don't end up ticking the boxes to subscribe to newsletters etc. . These type of magazines usually come wrapped in plastic and then imagine the amount of paper needed to print these to all the supporters nationwide. . As annoying as it is, I think best thing to do is to send them an email and ask them to remove my name from their subscription list and then suggest them to switch to digital magazines (or leave these physical ones only for people who truly don't use internet) to reduce waste. . Sending emails can make a difference. And even if the suggestion is not considered initially, it sends a message. They seem to be good quality socks and I like the plastic-free packaging. . These are fabrics that are damaged, stained that cannot be donated. My approach is usually to try to fix or repurpose the garments, but it is not always possible/needed and space is also an issue, so I am glad there is an option, and these won't end up in landfill. . Photo 2 shows you what items they accept. I was happy to find out they receive shoes and things like couch covers and fabric scraps. . First time you recycle with them, you pay the fee of $25 and you get it back in the form of credit so you can get some socks. Many of their socks are made with recycled materials which is great πŸ‘ and they look nice too. . According to statistics shared by War on Waste, Australia disposes 6000 Kg of fashion and textiles waste to landfill every 10 minutes 😣 . Bananas all have to look more or less the same, which means smaller, longer, bigger, curvier bananas don't make it to the shops (although I have seen small bananas are sometimes marketed to kids and of course they come in plastic). . These standards often lead to food waste and put unnecessary strain on farmers. Luckily some innovation is happening and now you can find banana flour.
