Recently I finally watched "Dark Waters" and wow. Recently I finally watched "Dark Waters" and wow. Even when I am well aware of the fact that we live in a soup of toxins and many companies take a very light approach when it comes to validating the safety of chemical they use, a case like this one is just madness . . And we are all part of this story because most of us have been exposed for years. . I often talk to friends and family about this topic and I always have the impression that they don't believe it is as bad as it sounds. I love the fact that this movie is bringing awareness about this matter. In the world we live today, it seems we are often exposed first hoping it is safe, until years later the scientific research proves otherwise. Shouldn't it be the other way around for our health and the environment? . I highly recommend this movie, you can borrow the DVD from your local library or stream it online. A couple of months ago, we finished using our last A couple of months ago, we finished using our last roll of plastic packaging tape which we bought years ago. This time we decided to buy paper taper. . Paper tape does the job and it is fully recyclable ♻️. That means cardboard boxes can be recycled together with this tape, which does not happen with plastic. . According to TreeHuger.com: . "Most of the tape that gets discarded is already stuck to something else, like a cardboard box or a piece of paper. The recycling process filters out tape, labels, staples, and similar materials, so a reasonable amount of tape typically runs through the process completely fine. However, in these cases, there's a catch. The plastic tape is filtered out and dumped in the process, so while it can go in the recycling bin in most cities, it does not get recycled into new material." . So paper seems a better option to me. It is also certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)🌳 . I told my neighbours about special programs which I told my neighbours about special programs which are available to recycle small plastic items (like lids and bread tags) which usually end up in landfill. And also told them I was happy to receive these items and drop them for recycling. . At first only one neighbour dropped these bread tags. But recently another neighbour told me that he had started collecting both items and he'd let me know when he had enough for recycling. . Sometimes people really don't know about these options, other times they are happy to help but life is busy and they never get around to do it. Other times they don't think it will make any difference. . Whatever the reason, I think it is worth telling friends, family or neighbours about these options, why they are important and also when possible, facilitate the process for them. For example: . 👉 Provide the nearest collection points ✅ Drop the items for them 👍 Explain how you store these items at home while you take them for recycling. . I think these are great ways to ignite small changes when people don't know much the waste issues and the environmental impact. . Plastic Lids program in Australia: Lids 4 Kids. The feeling of holding and reading a real book is The feeling of holding and reading a real book is great to me 📚, but it takes massive amounts of resources (and trees) to print and manufacture these books. According to the Guardian: . "A study of the US book industry for a single year (2006) estimated that publishing consumed approximately 30m trees and had a carbon footprint equivalent to 12.4m metric tons of carbon dioxide" . To me the best option is to borrow books from the local library, that's usually my way to go. The next option is to buy second-hand books ✅ . Pre-loved books are a bit harder to get, for instance the chances of going to an opp-shop and finding exactly that book you want to read are low (although it has happened to me a couple of times) . So an alternative is to get pre-loved books online. It is easier to find what you are looking for.
